What are the search engines?

Search Engines are those websites that specialize in search functions. Lately the word 'Googling' has become a household expression, but obviously, even if Google accounts for the overwhelming majority of search engine traffic (330 million unique visitors per month!), let's not forget there are other search engines.

Yahoo for example. Unlike Google, Yahoo's search engine fuction is only one of its many options. It also offers a Yahoo Messenger, news updates, a social network such as Yahoo Answers, hotel or car rental reservations, and much much more. But still, with over 500 million visitors per month, of who many use the search function, Yahoo is a very important search engine.

There is MSN. There are Altavista, Ask, Lycos. But basically any website providing a search function can be called a Search Engine : AOL, CNN, FoxNews, BBC.co.uk... you name it.

Two newer additions to the long list of search engines, and two that we particularly like, are Cuil.Com - the originality ! - or Google's eco-friendly version Blackle.Com. It takes some time to get used to the black background, but once you're into it, you hardly use anything else.
